چکیده

In this chapter, I provide a descriptive overview of quantification in Warlpiri, a Pama-Nyungan language spoken by approximately 3,000 people in central Australia. Warlpiri’s quantificational system is of particular interest due to the fact that a number of Warlpiri A-quantifiers are interpreted as taking nominal scope; that is, as Dquantifiers. Conversely, a number of Warlpiri D-quantifiers are interpreted as modifying the VP or event; that is, as A-quantifiers. I show that Warlpiri has a relatively large inventory of D-quantifiers, many of which are morphologically complex. This challenges standard assumptions of quantifiers as a typically monomorphemic lexical category, and sheds light on the relevant compositional properties of Warlpiri quantifiers.

We Wish to Thank

In this paper, we discuss some rather puzzling facts concerning the semantics of Warlpiri expressions of cardinality, i.e. the Warlpiri counterparts of English expressions like one, two, many, how many. The morphosyntactic evidence, discussed in section 1, suggests that the corresponding expressions in Warlpiri are nominal, just like the Warlpiri counterparts of prototypical nouns, eg. child. We...

The status of degrees in Warlpiri

Recent work in semantics has shown that languages can vary in whether or not they include degrees (that is, elements of type < d >) in their semantic ontology. Several authors have argued that their languages of study lack degrees, including Bochnak (2013) for Washo (isolate, USA), Pearson (2009) for Fijian (Austronesian, Fiji), and Beck, et al. (2009) for Motu (Austronesian, Papua New Guinea)....

Vowel harmony, directionality and morpheme structure constraints in Warlpiri

This paper examines theoretical analyses of vowel harmony in the light of data from Warlpiri, a language of Central Australia. Modern analyses account for vowel harmony in terms of a constraint requiring feature agreement within a particular domain (e.g. Backovic, 2000; Lombardi, 1996). These analyses predict that exclusively suffixing languages should exhibit only rightwards harmonies. They al...

algebra we learn ed . The visual algebraic components of Warlpiri iconography are obvious. We have a finite set of symbols and the symbols may becombined to make more complex struc tu res accord ing to a finite set of ru les. Compare this to the formation of equations in college algebra where the letters x and y, the in tegers 2 and 3, and the symbols =, + : , and " combine to make the complex ...

Connected speech processes in Warlpiri

Connected speech processes (CSP) in Warlpiri, an indigenous language of central Australia, taken from two fluent ‘dreaming’ monologues are analyzed with the aim of observing the influence of language particular phonological constraints and prosody upon phonetic processes of lenition, co-articulation and selective segmental enhancement.
